What happened

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission is returning to active rulemaking after new commissioners restored a three-member quorum. A proposed rule published on June 24 would establish mandatory federal safety standards for lithium-ion batteries used in e-bikes and other micromobility products if finalized. PeopleForBikes is also urging regulators to distinguish low-speed e-bikes from higher-powered e-motos and to improve import screening and mechanical-safety requirements.

Why it matters

The direction of travel is clear even though the battery rule is still proposed rather than final. Brands, importers and OEM suppliers selling into the United States should strengthen battery traceability, test-report management, charger/battery system documentation and change-control procedures now, so future federal requirements can be absorbed with less disruption.

Business takeaway• Treat battery compliance as a product-system issue, not only a cell issue.• Maintain traceable test reports, BOM control and supplier-change records.• Separate compliant low-speed e-bikes from e-moto-like products in product positioning.
