The European Commission published updated guidance to help industry prepare for the Digital Batteries Passport under Regulation (EU) 2023/1542. The guidance maps 71 data points across electric-vehicle batteries, light-means-of-transport (LMT) batteries and industrial batteries, indicating which information is mandatory, optional or conditionally applicable.

E-bike batteries fall within the LMT category. From 18 February 2027, each LMT battery placed on the EU market or put into service must have a battery passport. For e-bike brands, importers and OEM suppliers, the practical challenge is data readiness: product identification, responsible economic-operator information, technical characteristics, performance and durability data, and information supporting repair, reuse and recycling need to be structured so they can be maintained and accessed digitally through the required battery identifier and QR-linked system.

KEY BUSINESS IMPLICATIONS•  Start mapping battery-model and serial-level data now; February 2027 is close in product-development and sourcing cycles.•  Make battery suppliers contractually responsible for providing complete, structured and updateable technical data.•  Treat Battery Passport readiness as an IT + supply-chain project, not only a labeling task.
