The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission is moving back into active rulemaking, and battery safety is one of the most important issues for the electric-bike sector. PeopleForBikes reported on September 4 that the CPSC is considering a proposed mandatory federal safety standard covering lithium-ion batteries used in micromobility products and the electrical systems that contain them. If finalized, the rule would create federal battery-safety requirements affecting electric bicycles and other e-mobility products sold in the United States.
Why it matters for the industry: Battery certification, electrical-system design, documentation and importer compliance are becoming increasingly important commercial requirements in the U.S. market. PeopleForBikes is also urging regulators to distinguish legal low-speed e-bikes from higher-powered e-motos and to improve import screening. For OEM/ODM suppliers, this reinforces the value of designing U.S.-bound products around recognized safety standards from the beginning rather than treating certification as a final-stage task.
