Industry Update

The European Commission published updated guidance in August 2026 to help companies prepare for the Digital Battery Passport under Regulation (EU) 2023/1542. The requirement covers light means of transport batteries, including batteries used in e-bikes, e-mopeds and e-scooters. The Commission states that the battery passport becomes mandatory for relevant battery categories placed on the EU market from 18 February 2027.

Key Numbers

· DPP Registry became operational in July 2026.

· Updated Commission guidance published in August 2026.

· Mandatory battery passport date for relevant categories: 18 February 2027.

· E-bike batteries fall within the light means of transport battery category.

Market Analysis

The battery passport will increase the amount of product data that must be maintained across the supply chain, including battery identification, technical characteristics, performance, durability, repair/reuse information and sustainability-related data. This means battery suppliers and e-bike assemblers need better data management, traceability and coordination with EU economic operators.

B2B Takeaway

Factories selling to Europe should begin collecting structured battery data now. Make sure the battery supplier can support serial-level identification, chemistry and capacity data, compliance documentation, lifecycle information and digital data exchange with the importer or brand owner.
