Bosch has introduced Hub Line, its first hub motor within the smart system, aimed at lightweight urban e-bikes. The company lists 45 Nm of torque and a motor weight of approximately 5.1 lb. Its launch also introduces the PowerTube 360, a slim 360 Wh battery intended to support cleaner frame designs. Battery removal depends on the bicycle manufacturer’s configuration. [1]

The system connects with the eBike Flow app for functions including navigation, personal settings and software updates. Bosch also describes compatibility with its eShift electronic shifting solution. A new ConnectModule adds Bluetooth Low Energy to its tracking capabilities; extended security features are associated with the paid Flow+ service. [1]

Industry perspective

The industry opportunity lies in making an electric bicycle easy to live with throughout the day. For an urban rider, carrying the bike, parking it indoors and navigating traffic may matter as much as maximum assistance. A lighter, visually discreet system gives bicycle brands another way to address those needs.

Dealers can make this proposition tangible with demonstrations built around ordinary journeys: starting at a junction, lifting the bike over a step and finding a route. They should also explain which connected features are included and which require additional hardware or a subscription.

For product teams, this launch is a useful prompt to evaluate the complete commuter experience. The motor, battery, controls and service arrangements need to work together. A clear everyday benefit is easier for customers to judge than a long list of specifications.
