Accell Group’s Dutch entities received a suspension of payments on 5 August and were subsequently declared bankrupt by an Amsterdam court on 11 August. The group controls a large portfolio of well-known bicycle and e-bike brands, including Raleigh, Haibike, Winora, Ghost, Batavus, Koga, Lapierre, Sparta, Babboe and Carqon, as well as the XLC parts brand.
By 21 August, bankruptcy trustees had launched an international sales process, inviting buyers to bid for the business as a whole or for individual parts. Industry reporting links Accell’s difficulties to a combination of post-pandemic inventory pressure, discounting, overcapacity and a highly leveraged ownership structure. The process is now a major consolidation event for the European bicycle sector.
WHY IT MATTERS• Brand ownership, distribution agreements and supplier relationships may change as assets are sold or reorganized.• Dealers and distributors should watch continuity of supply, warranty support and inventory pricing across affected brands.• The case reinforces the industry-wide shift from “growth at any cost” toward cash generation, inventory discipline and sustainable margins.
