Power ratings need context

Motor wattage is only one variable in ride feel. Controller current, torque delivery, gearing, wheel size, heat management and rider load can be equally important. Peak-power advertising often cannot be compared directly with continuous-rated output.

What Buyers Should Evaluate

A stronger drive system can help on hills or under load, but may increase battery consumption and stress on drivetrains. Test acceleration, hill climbing, thermal behavior and braking as a complete vehicle system.

Market and Product Considerations

Regulatory definitions vary. Many European conventional pedelec categories require pedal assistance and a 250 W maximum continuous rated motor with assistance cutting off at 25 km/h; higher-powered designs may need a different approval route.

Practical Recommendations

Ask suppliers for continuous and peak power definitions, controller specifications and measured test conditions.

Questions to Ask Before You Buy

What configuration and test conditions support the advertised performance?

Which certificates, inspection records and after-sales parts are available for the exact production model?

What changes are needed for the intended destination market and rider category?
