Electric bike range is one of the most misunderstood numbers in the category. A manufacturer’s quoted result usually depends on a particular rider weight, assistance setting, route, speed, and temperature. Shoppers should use battery energy in watt-hours as a starting point and compare test conditions before comparing brands.

Understanding watt-hours

Multiply nominal voltage by amp-hour capacity to estimate nominal energy. For example, a 48V 15Ah pack is approximately 720Wh. If a rider averages 18Wh per kilometer, a simplified calculation suggests around 40 kilometers, but actual results vary substantially with weather, tire pressure, climbs, starts, and riding style.

Habits that can extend a trip

Use a comfortable but efficient cadence, select a lower assistance mode where practical, keep tires properly inflated, avoid unnecessary cargo weight, and moderate repeated accelerations. Cold weather can temporarily reduce available capacity; storing the battery within the maker’s advised temperature range helps.

Plan with a reserve

For long excursions, plan a safety margin rather than exhausting the battery at a remote location. Verify that any spare battery is genuine or expressly approved for the exact system. Never mix a battery with an incompatible controller or charger.
