Industry development
Eurostat-based reporting indicates that the European Union imported approximately 422,000 electric bicycles during the first six months of 2026, a year-on-year increase of 36%. China accounted for roughly 41% of those incoming units. This is an important change in sourcing patterns, particularly after years in which European inventory corrections and trade protection measures complicated the market.
Market and technology analysis
The rise in incoming shipments should not automatically be interpreted as an identical rise in consumer sell-through. Import volumes can also reflect restocking, changes in shipping schedules and distributors rebuilding assortments after reducing inventory. Nevertheless, the magnitude of the increase suggests that suppliers, importers and retailers have regained some willingness to commit to forward orders.
What manufacturers and importers should watch
For manufacturers, an effective response is to segment importers by price positioning, product class and regulatory capability. European-standard pedal-assist bicycles should be distinguished from high-powered throttle-driven machines, which may face substantially different legal treatment. Product dossiers, traceable batteries and after-sales spare parts can be as important as FOB pricing.
