A 2027 milestone approaches
In August 2026, the European Commission published updated guidance for the Digital Batteries Passport. The guidance covers batteries used in light means of transport, including e-bikes, and categorizes relevant data fields. The European Commission’s roadmap identifies 18 February 2027 as the start of passport obligations for certain categories of batteries.
The challenge starts upstream
A battery passport is not simply a QR-code artwork project. Relevant records can involve battery identification, chemistry, technical data, responsible economic operators, supply-chain traceability, and information governed by access rights. Which fields apply depends on the category and detailed implementing rules.
An exporter’s readiness checklist
Manufacturers should map battery and pack suppliers, establish stable product identifiers, review available cell and pack documentation, define data ownership, and test how records are maintained when components change. Procurement contracts should specify the information a supplier must supply and update.
Why this matters commercially
European distributors may increasingly compare suppliers on documentation maturity. Teams that organize battery data early can reduce last-minute launch disruptions; final legal obligations should be validated against the current regulation and country-level enforcement guidance.
